Derona admiring the turquoise Bahamian Sea from the window of our 14-passenger charter flight to Eleuthera. The name of the airline, Pineapple Air, says it all.

Christmas Plant, oh... hang on, it's a Christmas Tree!

Madeira is renowned for great outdoor gardens, full of plants just like the ones people grow in pots in their living room, back in mainland Europe. But in the warm Mediterranean climate innocent potted plants turn out to be not-so-innocent, monstrous trees or giant shrubs. Such is the case of Poinsettia, the red-leaved decorative flower popular in Europe at Christmas. In the outdoors, this innocent beauty can grow up to 4 meters tall. So if you’re spending Christmas in Madeira, rather than putting a Christmas Plant in the middle of your dining table, you can put the table underneath it, and enjoy the sight of a blue sky spotted with fiery red flowers ;)

spot the zombie
misty forests are an eerie, but not uncommon sight in Tenerife. Ever thought of filming a thriller located in the Canaries? ;)

Above the clouds
Landscapes need to be pristine, and rarely satisfy the high standards set by photographers. "Behind the scenes" shots give you a warm and fuzzy feeling of nostalgia, that no landscape can evoke.

a mountain on Fire
El Teide basking in the last rays of sun.
Three minutes later the sun vanishes under a blanket of clouds, temperature drops rapidly, and it's time to go home, before we get lost in a cloud of mist.

El Teide
Huh? Where is this? Arizona? Mexico? Peru?
Nothing of this kind my friend! What you see is El Teide, the highest volcano in Tenerife and the Spanish archipelago of Canary Islands.
Tenerife has a population of just under a million, but attracts five million visitors every year. The south is dotted with five star hotels, concrete swimming pools, and beaches of imported golden sand. But the north of the island is a hidden gem of pine forests, volcanic rock, banana plantations and amazing cliff tops. Mountainous villages remind you of Mexican Pueblos, the northern cliff tops of Cornwall, and the pine forests, especially when immersed in a cloud of mist, of B-class horror movies - those with a wooden chalet and demons in the basement.
Tenerife is amazing, provided that you ditch your flip flops and the guided bus tour, and invest in a nice pair of hiking boots and a map. This is what we've done last Christmas, and had a fabulous time!
